Gold profit and loss

How to calculate gold profit or loss for several physical items

Use purchase price, weight, workmanship fee, and the current buy price to estimate physical gold portfolio value and profit or loss.

Short answer: Calculate the recorded total cost of each gold item, estimate its current value with the latest buy price, and subtract cost from estimated value. The result is an approximate profit or loss.

Gold profit and loss formulas

Recorded total cost = purchase price per gold baht × weight + workmanship fee

Estimated current value = current buy price × weight

Estimated profit or loss = estimated current value − recorded total cost

A gold profit loss calculator Thailand users rely on should use the buy price when estimating what a shop might pay. The shop’s sell price is not the amount an owner should expect to receive.

One-item example

Suppose you bought one gold baht for THB 50,000 and paid a THB 800 workmanship fee. Recorded total cost is THB 50,800. If the current buy price is THB 52,000, estimated value is THB 52,000 and the estimated difference is a THB 1,200 profit.

The example does not account for purity, condition, wear, or individual shop policy. Ask a shop for an actual quote before deciding to sell.

How to calculate several items

Calculate cost and value separately for each item, then total the results. This preserves different purchase dates, prices, and workmanship fees and shows which item contributes most to the portfolio’s gain or loss.

This is the most useful way to calculate physical gold portfolio value. A change in today’s market price alone cannot tell you whether every item you own is profitable.

Why use an app instead of repeating the calculation

A portfolio app stores the original inputs, so you do not need to re-enter them whenever the latest price changes. Gold Go compares the records you create with estimated value based on the current buy price.

If the result looks wrong

Check whether weight is in Thai gold baht, whether purchase price is a per-baht price or an item total, whether the workmanship fee has been counted twice, whether the correct gold type is selected, and when the market data was last updated.

This calculation organizes personal records. It is not investment advice or a recommendation to buy or sell.
